Dish Network customers will pay between and more a month beginning Feb. 1 as the company faces higher programming costs and a one-time expense stemming from new legislation, a company representative said Wednesday.
Customers, who were notified of the rate increase in their January bills, will see their bills increase an average of 4.3 percent, said Kelley Baca, spokeswoman for Dish Network. The figure is based on the company's average monthly bill, which currently is .11.
"We have been very aggressive in fighting unreasonable price increases from our programmers, and we will continue to fight to keep pricing reasonable for our programming and customers," she said. "Dish Network has resisted many yearly increases on many of our packages."
However the company saw its programming costs rise 7 percent in 2004 alone, Baca said.
In addition, Dish Network also is facing a one-time million cost as a result of recent legislation known as SHVERA, or the Satellite Home Viewer Extension and Reauthorization Act.
Dish Network carries local channels in more than 150 markets. Sometimes they split the channels between two dishes. This (legislation) is asking that they all be on one dish," Baca said. The one-time cost represents a variety of expenses that Dish Network will incur as it complies with the new legislation.
