Judge OKs UMG channel launch Makes It mandatory
April 15, 2005
Universal Music Group's new 24-hour music channel is launching today thanks to a New York federal court ruling. A U.S. District Court judge ordered EchoStar Communications (Dish Network) to carry IMF: The International Music Feed on its Dish Network, issuing a mandatory preliminary injunction Wednesday. UMG parent company Vivendi Universal sued EchoStar for breach of contract after the satellite service postponed the Jan. 22 launch date of IMF. "We are clearly pleased with the court's ruling," IMF president Andy Schuon said in a statement. "We are excited to bring a fresh global music perspective to U.S. television viewers." Litigation is pending between UMG and EchoStar, but the court found that Vivendi was "extremely likely to prevail," according to the injunction.
